Is this a game? A visual novel? What is it?

ANSWER: It's a programming playground and it has a little bit of everything until I find a sweet spot. It's neither here nor there, but it's an experimental web toy for me to learn programming concepts. You can play around with it!

What exactly is the world of Goetia?

ANSWER: A fictional setting written for fun by my partner and me over the last decade. This site is pretty much my attempt at creating an interactable slice of this world. It might be rough and all over the place, but it's our baby come to life and we love it very much.

Do you have a roadmap or plan for gamedesign?

ANSWER: Nope, not yet. This project is still in its baby shoes and I'm trying to expand it gradually while keeping the feature scope within reason - I don't want it to creep out of control.

What do you use to draw?

ANSWER: I work in Photoshop and draw on a Cintiq 22 mounted on an Ergotron LX.

What is this site made with?

ANSWER: The site backend is written in PHP and MySQL. I use Javascript to control the frontend and bounce around player data. There's some JQuery too because it's a nice shorthand.

How is my save data stored?

ANSWER: Localstorage is a simple little function that saves your data to your browser's cache. This means you always have access to it in the same browser, but might get wiped if you clear your cache. Switching to another browser will not retain your data.

Why not use a database?

ANSWER: I already ran userdata through MySQL but decided it's a bit overkill for a single player experience. Since data is handled and formatted in JSON there needs to be a solid plan for data structure before dedicating to a database. I might consider database-based saving in the future once I return to the account backend. Keep in mind that there are a lot of bells and whistles to account and database security that I have to consider first too.

Why not just make a game in a readily available engine?

ANSWER: I like the web and I like the versatility of Javascript, but I'm not excluding the possibility that I might expand one day!

Do you store any of my data?

ANSWER: No, I take in no userdata or set cookies. The Patreon login system sets a token for you to stay logged in for a bit, but that's about it!

Is there a way for me to view my save data?

ANSWER: Yes, if you don't want to use your browser's inspect tools you can simply click here.
